The Bayon temple just before sunset...

In my home country December 25 means waking up late in the morning after long hours of Noche Buena. Check some Christmas leftovers, eat and then go back to sleep. It's always that way for me. But imagine Christmas day visiting some very old architecture and looking at those big stone faces all man-made thousands of years ago. Imagine entering in huge temples only opened for Kings before and walking inside the Khmer empire leading you to the King's thrown and restricted to the commons long long time ago. Imagine...

My partner and I visited Cambodia or Cambodge the day before Christmas. We have been wanting to see Angkor Wat. We have read about this destination in many travel magazines. It's even featured in a documentary on TV one time. From Kuala Lumpur, we arrived in Siem Reap after only about an hour. The guys from the agency we arranged for pick up at the airport are already waiting for us so we never had any problem going to Empress Angkor hotel. When we arrived at the hotel, we got so impressed with the surroundings plus they have a very polite staff. There's no wonder that it's one of the nicest hotel in Siem Reap.

In the afternoon, the receptionist arranged for our tour driver and guide. We headed first to the town area. We chose to go around the City first so we could get a feel of the place. We went to their local market and bought a very nice table cloth as souvenir then walked along Pub St., the busiest street during the night and I believe the most famous corner in town.

It's Christmas day! We had a very relaxing morning at the hotel. In the afternoon, as planned, we headed straight to Angkor Wat temple. There are already a lot of people mainly tourists all over the place. The temple from the outside view is very beautiful and timeless. As we walked down the entrance, I got more amazed with the massive temple grounds and the temple itself. I was thinking of how they manage to build it during that time without the use of any high technology equipment and how it survived for years. Well, it is good to have a tour guide because you can raise your questions easily and anytime about the temple. We took lots of photos and waited for the sunset. The temple was so beautiful as it changes it's color from the outside (4th photo). We also went to Angkor Thom where you can see the Bayon (the temple of faces) through the south gate from Angkor Wat. What a unique Christmas day indeed.
